Ribera del Duero: the name every wine lover must know
If you have tried Comenge Biberius or Comenge El Origen and wondered where that elegance comes from—that combination of fresh fruit, fine tannins, and a long finish—the answer is always the same: Ribera del Duero. One of the most prestigious designations of origin in Spain and the world.
What is Ribera del Duero?
Ribera del Duero is a wine designation of origin located in Castile and León, Spain, along the Duero River. The region is characterized by:
- Altitude: 700-900 meters above sea level, which creates cold nights that preserve acidity and aromas
- Extreme climate: Hot summers and very cold winters, which concentrate the fruit in the grape
- Clay-limestone soil: Ideal for the Tempranillo grape, which is called Tinto Fino here
The Tempranillo grape: the heart of Ribera del Duero
Almost 100% of Ribera del Duero wines are made with Tempranillo (locally called Tinto Fino). It is a grape with compact clusters, high natural acidity, and firm tannins that respond extraordinarily well to aging in French oak.
The result: wines with ripe red and black fruit, earthy notes, hints of leather and tobacco, with a structure that makes them improve over the years in the bottle.
Comenge: the Ribera del Duero winery at Merkato
Comenge is one of the most respected family wineries in Ribera del Duero. Founded in 1999 in Curiel de Duero, it produces wines at different levels of expression:
- Comenge Biberius — Young, fresh, 5 months in oak. The perfect introduction to Ribera del Duero.
- Comenge El Origen Crianza — 16 months in French oak. Elegant, deep, for special occasions.
- Comenge Reserva Familia — The top of the range. The ultimate expression of Comenge's Tempranillo.
Who likes Ribera del Duero?
Those who value elegance over power. If you find Argentine Malbec powerful and direct, Ribera del Duero will seem refined and complex to you. It is not better or worse: it is a different register. And it is the preferred register for many of the most demanding palates in Bogotá.
